A deep red mahogany finish doesnt have to be the result of a complicated process. Ill show you how I use a simple two-step method to revitalize my mother in laws old beat up rocking char. First, a coat of General Finishes Merlot Water-Based Dye. Second, a coat of General Finishes Brown Mahogany Gel Stain. Its all finished off with a nice satin lacquer topcoat.

maybe as you next project you can make a nice little camera box with a clean glass as its front so you can stick the camera inside and film events that can get stuff on the lense and ruin your camera. Seeing your type of work i reckon you will over-engineer the piece and make it a masterpiece so cant wait to see it. Or if you have an aquarium thats not used you can just build a nice top for it that seals airtight and bam.

Perhaps I should have called is reddish brown, haha. The finish was exactly what I intended it to be, but I suppose there are a few thousands shades that could fall under the reddish brown category or even the "deep red" category. But the real point in this exercise was to show how layering color can bring some nice undertones, and by varying one component or the other, you can tweak the results to your liking. You could be there for weeks running test boards with this stuff. I love it! :)

Well a few things. I called several upholsterers and they all quoted me about the same price. Rebuilding the springs was a big factor in the cost. And secondly, I would not have my mother-in-laws prized possession be my first upholstery practice piece, lol. I wanted it done quickly and done right.

I always say my stepmom is a great cook because it turns out the way she intends, even if I don't like something. Same goes here -- it's a beautiful BROWN finish, but it doesn't look "deep red" as promised... Maybe a redder mahogany wash under a mahogany gel would have turned out more like what I expected to see? In my own attempts to date, I usually slip off the desired color towards TOO bright red or (???) nearly purple. Ah, experiments in blending, eh?

I'd personally lean towards temperature and variable viscosity stain/laquers being your issue, dav... I spray from the same can different days, and it RUNS one day and coats smooth the next. Oddly, some run when colder and some when hotter. Humidity affects dry-time, but (at a reasonable thickness coat) that shouldn't have as much effect.

I have to agree... $400 seems WAY high for that *simple* upholstery. If you had TONS of beading and tucking and nailheading and and and and... maybe. This just isnt' that big a piece, and it looks like a really simple job there. As well as being fun, I do this sort of woodworking to get better quality at the same price, or at least the same (high) quality at a lower price... blowing it on someone else doing fabric doesn't make sense to me.

I must say that the new 480p setup makes for a much nicer full screen video. I use a 24" lcd monitor and the video finally looks good at full screen. Nice project and thanks for the multilayer color and result video.

Thanks Dav. Did you not make it to the very end of the video? I show a picture of the piece after upholstery. And I am still on the fence about the waterbased stuff. Seems like every year the options are getting better and better. But there's still nothing quite like the ease of use of a real lacquer. But I'll keep trying until I find something I really like.

French Cleat Storage System

A French cleat is as ingenious as it is simple. It involves securing a strip of wood with a 45 degree bevel to the wall, and then securing an opposing beveled strip on the back of a cabinet or anything you want to hang. Its incredibly strong and versatile. Its a great way to hang cabinetry and as you'll see in this video, it can be used to make an awesome modular wall storage unit.

your absolutely correct ! all woodworkers need as much workspace as they can possibly get. i work in a cramped space of 10ft x 14 ft . and while i do manage to get projects done, i have to be honest in saying that my lack of proper workspace is beginning to restrict what i can, and cannot do :( i would kill to have the space you have , but then again, im not a full-time woodworker and i realise you need a bigger place for yourself. what was wrong with the old shop?

In this video, I glue the back panel strips to the shelves, add an extra ebony adornment with a slot-cutting bit, and give a relatively lengthy tutorial on chopping the resulting mortise nice and square. I finish up by creating the ebony strips for the front of the top and bottom case pieces and then I finally glue the case together.

Sadly, your wife wasn't readily available for me to poke in the arm and knock off balance. Thus, without that handy pressure guide, my bandsaw blade tension is not likely correct. Seriously, you mentioned trueing the rubber tires, which my dictionary defines as "make level." With most bandsaws, isn't there supposed to be a crown (hump) in the center of the tire to help the blade track properly?

Have you set the fence for the drift. Bandsaw blades rarely cut perfectly straight, but they do cut at a consistent angle. You need to set your fence to that exact angle in order to make cuts using the fence.

Hey torgy! Unfortunately man, I don't think they come in round. But, you could always use a wooden dowel if you want to switch to something non-metal. Hard maple might work. Not sure how well it will perform though compared to the metal that's there now. Sure would be quieter though.

i have a skill band saw an OK starter saw. It has metal rods to keep the blade from any right or left play and a bearing behind the blade. They all have round stock. So do either of the 2 types of non metal come in round stock thank you Chevy Chase LOL

This is a great video. Safety is always worth spending more on. A better respirator is better breathing. Just a tip, respirators work best on DIRECT SKIN contact. So shave before you put one on.

Really? Can you cite examples? I know there are times when I have forgotten to wear them, but over the hundred or so videos I've done, I bet I can count on one hand the number of times I forgot to wear ear/eye protection when it was called for. The viewers are very good at reminding me when I mess up safety-wise, so I am pretty aware of every time I've screwed up.

Thanks man. I'm with dshantalla there, don't have any protection, but have been doing some major routing lately. Our home vacuum cleaner and a rag tied around my face just isn't doing it anymore. Time to buy a mask. Thanks for running us through the options.

very interesting video. i dont have a big shop set up, what i actually have is a garage sized shed out my garden and i have it equipped with the basic 3. which are table saw, bandsaw and mitresaw. i do use the router alot and i have a dewalt track saw in the post so i may look into this subject a bit more. currently, i dont use any dust protection at all. only thing i have on my head is safety glasses. i think its time i got a good dust mask. thanks for the vid and the info marc :)
