Sounds good at first but it fails to take into consideration the width of the blade. Further, it would be extremely unsafe to be pushing the strips you've already cut, plus the current stock through the table saw. It would be way too cumbersome, be prone to kick-back (which is what this avoids), and would not lend itself to accuracy.

Instead of moving the fence for every cut, why don't you take the strip you have just cut and place it between the stock and fence and do this with every strip cut, that way the stock moves over the exact width of the strip just cut.

This happens secondary to change in moisture inside the wood. Usually with wood bought in from a different climate. It can be helped by letting the wood cure in it's rough shape in the shop where it will be built before working it. I have read where some luithers (however you spell guitar builders) even go as far as to bring their pieces into their homes at night for that very reason. Western / dry states have prob. with this. Test the wood for humidity/moisture and then your shop.

I'm sorry, but for anyone saying thay Charles craftsmenship is bad because he's had to use this technique many times, is a complete fool. You can have the straightest peice of wood, jointed, and planned, then rip it, and it will throw a curve right back in to it. It could be clamped dead on straight, and things like that will happen. That's why there are little tricks like this one.

no offense, but if you have had to do this "many many times", it doesn't say much for your manufacturing abilities. surely you should be looking to machine the components dead straight and square (and out of dry, straight grained quarter sawn lumber) so that when glued up the workpiece is truly flat ? this method, assuming it does actually work will only work when the wood is in the white, once you have applied a finish, you're fcked ...

this won't work and I doubt if they tried it that it lasted much time.. divided light doors like that can twist for a number of reasons, mainly because they are clamped up wrong and not clamped flat. If they are clamped flat and twist anyways its likely because you aren't using properly dried wood and your shop has poor humidity and temperature conditions. Even if this video method worked for them, I doubt it lasted, once a door twists up you won't be able to get it perfectly flat again.

However, after spraying with precatalyzed lacquer a couple of the doors twisted, which resulted in the lower corners sticking out proud of its neighboring door (which didn't twist at all - strange given that they were cut from the same piece of wood). The doors are already finished so I can't steam/wet them. I tried "bending" them back into shape, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Did the lacquer cause this?

I've got one for you... I recently built a console out of Birch "multi-ply" featuring 4 doors (2 sets of double-doors) below 4 drawers. All door and drawer faces were cut from the same piece of Birch plywood so the grains match perfectly....

Good initiative in creating a woodworking video. I would take an extra minute to address safeties for the bandsaw guard and safe disposal of the finish rag. Response to ulyssesyt - not true. The Shopsmith Bandsaw is one of the best power tools made specifically for woodworkers. Most bandsaws out there are metal cutting saws, adapted for woodworking. The Shopsmith Bandsaw was "designed" as a woodworkng bandsaw. Besides, Jewelry boxes can be made on ANY bandsaw and even scrollsaws!

good choice on the wood, I respectfully disagree on the finishes...they provide no real protection, but are food safe....however evry known clear finish is food safe after it has cured...typically about 2 weeks.and provide protection and seal the wood from absorbing food liquids...mineral oil and wax do not....give it a test...

Best choice for food contact is maple. Rock maple is the gold standard. Non-toxic and I have not heard of allergy issues, which something like cherry or walnut may cause. But also, we are talking about food contact, it's not a cooking vessel. The amount of a proper hardwood you get into your cooked product is minuscule. Mineral oil and/or beeswax to finish.

I'm building it to coordinate with my mid-century modern decor, which is mostly walnut, teak, and rosewood. I guess maple could be stained dark, but it would be nice to use walnut, teak, or rosewood. Maybe wenge, cocobola, ebony, padouk, etc. Is there a website that lists "toxic" hardwoods? I'd like to know which are more dangerous if consumed.

Thanks for being so thorough. As a beginner I use an old Craftsman I rebuilt (it was trash). Its fence is incomplete (no lockdown mechanism) and normally isn't square with the blade, so every cut I make I have to measure it from each side of the blade and then clamp the other end of the fence with a C-clamp, and pray it doesn't move during a cut. You are so lucky to have a real table saw!

actually what i do is to keep pressure on the back as i start thru then transfer my pressure to the front after i reach the halfway point, if i am jointing something that has a ggod size bowin it and i am forced to joint it with the bowed side down the above will not work, in this case i keep the pressure on the infeed side ( starting side)...

I been milling my own wood now and started to get in to wood work..I hope you dont think this is a stupid question,,but I keep hearing diff. things about the best way to run a piece tru a jointer and I'm kinda confused...Is it best to put pressure on the front of the table *as soon as your piece touches it* or the back of the table runnin a piece tru..I just wanted your thought what you do....Thanks again..I learned alot frm your vids!

For a given project, how do you like to choose a mortising method- router, mortise chisel, drill and clean, mostise machine etc.? What aspects of the project help you decide? thats a great idea for a straight chisel using that straight wooden black. ill be using a mortising machine but ill still be using your technique like they did before the power machines came along. its always good to learn different techniques in woodworking. cool.

Personally I'd get "MHG" chisels, they're not too expensive considering their quality. I bought some a few months ago and was surprised how good they were, hornbeam handles and chrome vanadium blades; very very strong, and takes an edge really well! I'm not sure how available they are in the states though, since they're a German manufacturer.

Have a 1/4 and 3/8 hollow mortise bit that adapt to my drill press. For hard wood such as oak I start the holes with the hollow chisel mortise bit and remove most of the wood with a same diameter high speed bit in a hand drill. Demonstrated in my video Kitchen Cart Mortise

I do the same thing on site building stairs, but I use a brad point bit and a dedicated motising chisel and a hammer. Just like your corner chisel, but I cut four surfaces at once. Makes clean fast work.

@greyhall1 I would not use the alcohol on a finished piece, using a damp cloth and a clothes iron often will swell them back out , but go easy the moisture and heat can also cloud the finish... its hard to get the moisture into the wood because of the finish.. so again go easy..

usually steam doesnt work thru a finish , but try using a sharp razor blade , make a clean slice on the dent to break thru the finish, then apply hot water , sometimes it will seep thru the cut and swell the dent out , you could also try a little steam, but go easy or you can damage the finish, when done a quick coat of wax will hide the cut, other wise just sand it down steam the dent and refinish, I wouldnt replace ,

Any suggestions for "stained" stair treads, (Oak). Very small dents, 1/8" deep @ Max. But Home owner is an ass & requests entire staircase be replaced due to 4 small dents not visible from a standing position. (dam people!). Any advice? Will steam work through a stained and varathaned/laquered finish?

I am new to your posts. I have been woodworking for almost 7 years. I do a distressing on the wood that adds dents, we actually hit it with a chain so the wood looks as though it is an antique. very cool tricks this will come in handy when i need to do a fine finish piece. Also does this work on hard woods as well as soft woods?

That's a nice way to cut an octagon. In the past I had set my jointer deep and on a 45 to get that cut. It did not come out as deep and nice as yours near the entry cut. It would serve, and could pass, but not like yours. I also have cut them with a chamfer spokeshave, a lot of work, and then the "lambs tounge". I like the way you work. Thanks for posting. You beat old "NORM" for the real deal.

The thing I really liked about his class was that he shows you how to do something and then he makes you do it on your own and he won't let you leave until he knows that you know what you are doing. The DVD on Jigs is loaded with a lot of good information.

I've seen a four sided pencil post done on bandsaw and a joiner. I like those jigs though. Good job taking the audio levels down for the machine noise and fast forwarding through the blade stopping and stuff. Your upping your (video)production values. Thanks for another good video.
