Hope they change out the crap Chinese whistles. Why three engines? Ridiculous. Do one engine on three trains. Did they move engineer controls to right side of locomotives? Glad these engines were saved. In China, they would be run until worn out and scrapped.

I am headed to China at the middle of November we have been told we might get the chance to see the last two survivers of this class on home rails for an excursion but it hasnt been confirmed by the Chineese railway yet I trully hope they let us we will be seeing the surviveing SY class 2-8-2s working in a few steel mills and a small narrow gauge logging railroad but its the QJs over there I want to see if only for one day

I have come to Rollag off and on since about 1954 or 55, soon after it began. In about 1988 the tractor parade, with two abreast, ran for 2 hours and 10 minutes. I found that the best way to view the parade is to have the wind at your back and be where the engines are chugging uphill so you can hear them work better. There is an incredible variety of period stuff to see. It's like a museum, except the machines are usually running!

Ihave been watching the History Channel for yearsand it can,t compare to this clip. All these gadgets work from steam. Diesels suck ! Steam you can see how it works and those steam traction engins may be slow but they will crush and flatten everything in their way

First you have to see the sparks show in the evening, then head over to the machine shed for local music which is the best way to end a Saturday night. I just love going here each year that I can. Now find an old dynamo off a junk elevator or out of a factory, belt it up to that sucker and start making your own electricity! Also run a 2" black iron pipe from the steam chest to the smokebox on the boiler. That will give you extra draft and the steam will go up the flue like its supposed to, (it'll also SOUND good chugging along). Great job! We used steam traction engines on the farm when I was a boy 60+ years ago and they are amazing.

@maricklee Well, for this engine as for all most steam engines, they all have to go together in a certain order so one part doesn't get in the way of another while re-assembling it. There are many different forms of steam engines and have there own way of being put together. And you have to be careful with all the parts, because most, if not all of them are made of cast iron. And if you drop'em, CRACK!!!. Remember, these machines aren't brand new, they're the farthest thing from it! LOL!

Lots of people say that steam engines are obsolete but that is the least bit true, only piston steam engines are obsolete. Steam TURBINES still produce about 95% of the world's power. It's kind of cool to look at nuclear power plants because they are a combination of the old (steam turbine) and the new (uranium fission). Steam turbines actually hold up better to intensive use than any other type of engine (diesel and such) hence why they are used in power plants.

for it to work, I think it would need two tanks, a smaller combustion chamber to inject air and fuel into, then a larger tank to store that pressure created from the explosion. It may need a blower to fill the chamber with air, perhaps something like a small vacuum cleaner with exhaust hose.This may sound weird, but I think it can work, the idea is to get around the time it takes to create the pressure. Explosion is much faster than heating water, or pumping air into a tank. Time is the problem.

a billion dollar idea: it take time to create pressure in the tank, whether steam or air. Why not inject fuel into the boiler tank, then spark it to explode that fuel to create instant pressure stored in the tank. By injecting/sparking fuel into the boiler tank,it would not take that time to build up pressure. I would think this is far more efficient use of fuel too, since a limiter would inject fuel on demand. I would think a steam boiler would be easy to convert. Will it work?

Really nice. But, notice how fast it decelerates when you remove the reed switch? There's still a compression stroke and that detracts from efficiency. Keep an eye on my 4-stroke to 2-stroke conversion project. It will have virtually no intake stroke, a power stroke and an exhaust stroke that's pretty much free wheeling, powered by hydrogen injected under mild pressure during the 15* or so that the intake valve opens. I fried a DMM from HV like that once. Take care. Z

Check out some videos of two and four stroke engine operation, and you'll see WHY they take mixed or regular gas.

Where can i get the type of solenoid valve you have? the one i got is for a sprinkler system and its not nearly as good. it doesnt respond as quick,ly so i have to play around with the timing. I'm actually working on a type of "timing advance" because if you increase the psi going into it it runs rough unless you adjust the "timing".

At 4:47, you mentioned getting zapped; why not connect a diode across the coil to snub the back EMF? A 1N4001 (or similar power diode) should do the trick. (Remember to connect the arrow side of the diode to +) Nice pneumatic engine!

I've been inspired by this idea to use the heat from my 10' reflective parabola to make steam, and run that to a similar setup. I have a couple of concerns, first, a solenoid valve that can handle the temperatures of compressed steam... and I can also see that the lubrication on the rings of the piston will be quickly steam-cleaned out of the system. Maybe use teflon rings? I've been looking to see if you have any new videos pursuing this idea!

it would be even more efficient if you caught the exhaust air and returned it into a compressor inlet, you would do that by replacing the exhaust box and making it air tight. then run a return line into a small compressor and then set up the inlet like you have it set up now, then wallah you have a self sufficient engine.

That engine is a newly built recreation of the original I remember reading somewhere. So nice polished forgings and no oil cans necessary, stays nice and clean. I have been in a number of steam vessels with period engines, rough castings, steam leaks, dripping oil etc, they are not clean at all lol.

Hi - beautifully clean. Ship is in steam, can hear the 3 chime steam whistle. These engines will go that slow when the engineer is warming through. The oil bottles are a nice feature. Cut out in the carlin might be an issue if it is structural...

Other than in the video, I always recycle the water. The engine pumps the condensed steam back into the boiler. On the contrary, not needing lubricant is a great advantage. It does not foul the boiler and the steam can be condensed for distilled water. The straight line piston movement eliminates the need for lubricants and eliminates wear. The piston rings are "O" rings. not tight metal rings.

The air pump it self is like a oscillating steam engine but it not sealing the steam off but wasting steam out a large port this means there no power stoke on the exhaust side like a Traction engine that has a steam port on the back side that lets steam in to push the pistion back to the starting pont. This mean you have two power stokes. Oscillating steam engine are like 2cyc engine thay run at higher RPM but with less power and Traction engine are like 4stoke run at less Rpm with more power.

very cool. would be nice to have solar power from thermal to avoid the costly solar panels. if cheap. you might want to do an efficiency experiment. measure the mechanical power vs the air power. a pressure sensor and flow gauge should tell the power used in the air. mechanical power can be done with newtonmeter coupling, radius value and rpm measure. do that for various loads and pressures to map out the efficiency. also I hunch that a large piston is more efficient. rotating ball valve

Because the amount of amps it needs to deliver to a closed circuit, is much larger, than other loads (like the fan, and the light bulb) If you ever come across a dynamo (e.i. a bike light with a wheeldriven dynamo) try to short-circuit it, and se how much more power is needed.

Beautify!!! 1 sq. meter surface has a potential of collecting 1 K joules of energy per second. Just imagine if most bridges over water stream among islands, riversides, coastal lines, railroad sides, freeway roadsides can install these sunlight steam power generators, we can generate a lot of Kilo Watts of electricity. Dan, have you considered using high-temp, closed-circuit recirculating synthetic oil as a medium instead of water direct to steam? The high heat would build to around 600F, retain heat during cloudy days and continue to radiate hours after dark. The heat would be used to create steam in a separate condenser loop to drive some sort of steam engine. Not sure if that's practical or not...just an idea.

Hey Dan, great video. I love those steam engines. Quick thought about it though, would it be possible to route the exhaust of the engine to a small pre-heating heat exchanger? Using the exhaust energy to preheat the water thus lowering input energy. Wish I had a place to experiment. :) Good work.

Either way, time to hook up a generator and run some current through a large resistor and measure the current going thru the resistor and the voltage across it. Electrical power will be Voltage X Current. Total efficiency will be (Voltage X Current)/(1000 * area of collector( in sq meters) ).

The video is representative of the scene in Bulawayo today (August 2009) where 2-3 Garratts shunt passenger and freight cars every day. This in all reality is because of Mugabe and his policies which have caused foreign investment (and currency to by diesels and spares) to dry up. Additionally Zimbabwe has coal but no oil! This is a homemade six cylinder steam engine. Very small (2"x3"x3.5"). The cylinder are 3/8 diameter. Made from hard anodized aluminum, brass, bronze aluminum, 440 stainless steel. The crank shaft is one piece stainless steel. Runs on two small bearings. A medium size version is in fabrication 80 percent all ready made. Next version has gears and foward reverse control.

easiest way to make a steam engine is to take an airhogs accelerator, take the air powered engine off of the air tank and connect the tube on the engine to some sort of boiler.( i used a unopened coke can that i poked a small hole in it so the tube would fit nice and tight, then i filled the can half way with water, stuck the tube in the hole, put a candle under the can and waited a few minuets, turned the propeller, and the engine started going! maybe ill make a vid of it sometime

I beg to differ. US steam (SP 4449, 844 ect) was built to haul long trains at fast speeds, and climb steep grades. This was a difficult balance to overcome. In Europe, grades are few and far between but in the States, grades are numerous and the need for power and speed was greater.

By the way the SD90MAC-H is shit, Union Pacific announced that it would be retiring its SD90MAC-Hs. The GE Evolution ES44AC is so much better. Has more power with a V12 Prime mover not a V16.

Kings,Castles,A4's, Merchant Navy, whatever, you name it were all fantastic machines but to suggest that any one of them could go head to head with the likes of 844 suggest to me that you live in a different dimension to the rest of us. On a ton for tractive effort basis a King is infinitely superior to the 844 but that 844 is three times the total weight and by sheer size wins out. A little like comparing an AEM 7 to an E60. Another example of European technology triumphing over US big is best.

Lets get things in to perspective here. The design speed was 80mph. The tractive effort was a tad over 135,000 lbs. They produced their optimal horsepower at 35mph and their maximum at 10mph...diesels produce theirs from a standstill. The Big Boy was designed to haul 3600 US tons over a 1.14% grade. An SD90MAC-H diesel produces 200,000 lbs of TE and would eat a BiG Boy for breakfast. I love the big steam locos but I understand why they were replaced with diesels. Let's keep it real folks.

(Continued) I used a particle system that grew within the chamber and was linked to an animated dummy which dragged it along the pipes. Then a second paricle system grew within the cylinder to match the movement of the piston. Video Post was used with a glow filter on the particles to give the final effect. Remember, you only have to animate one cycle and repeat it in your post editing program to create as long a sequence as you want. Hope this helps.

3D Studio was the modelling program used. The best way to time the piston/slide valve is to animate your piston first and make your slide move at half that speed (twice the amount of frames) as it feeds the cylinder for each stroke of the piston in both directions. You will need to adjust your timings to take into account the time taken for the steam to pass through the feed pipes (in the real world this would be extremely fast and not good for this anim. (See next reply)

Thanks. What can I say - I enjoyed building the model and learning how these wonderful machines actually worked. If you ever get the chance to visit Loch Lomond, go and see the Maid of the Loch at Balloch. Her engines are undergoing complete renovation with new state of the art boilers. I will be there when she sails again - 27 years after being taken out of service.

Hi, Yes, when I began this study, I thought they should be 180 degrees but found out that the crank is at 90 degrees to aid starting (as well as other reasons). Apparently, if the engine stopped with the crank in line with the connecting rods, it would be extremely difficult to start. Having one big end at 90 degrees solves this by meaning the engine could stop and be started from any piston position.
