Use autocad 2010 and change to 3D modeling. I'm a sophomore in highschool and i'm in engineering design (took pre-engineering for a whole year last year). the programming part is done via computer using G-code. (lots of different software for that) it's more the controller hardware that can get complicated (unless you spend lots of money on pre-made stuff)

To gain better precision you should use axis from copy machines instead of this rails. You can get them next to nothing at local scrap yard. I have bought plenty of axis and four steppers (two sanyo-denki) motors for less than 5 $ :-)

This looks like very soft carbon steel. Any variable Helix 4 flute endmill would work fine on this. If it's regular steel, I would never use flood coolant. My only concern is that you can easily increase the toollife by air blowing the chips out of the part so the endmill does'nt eat up the chip twice. Deboer Tool has a nice endmill called X-Mill for those type of applications.

I'm not saying anything is bad. It is really impressive. My hardest material that I've ever milled was duraluminum in 1,5mm sheets. That is really nothing compared to a steel bar like this. Thinking of those forces and the heat energy on its own is somewhat mind-blowing for me.

Yeah and the feed rate is low and the spindle speed seems about 800. When you are machining composite parts especialy kevlar you have to cool it with air so the fibers and resin system do not burn. Adding water or more importantly oil is avoided to exposed fiber that has not been sealed. Sometimes straight water is allowed.

Some coated carbide endmills don't need coolant. In fact, coolant can cause thermal cracking in some cases. I've used 4 inch face mills, on mild steel without coolant, because that was what the insert manufacture recommended.

Yes I agree and also I would climb cut the ID not conventional easer on the tooling and better finish I know it doesn't matter on a thread ID but why not do it anyway, just a good habit, also climb cutting although not in this application because it was roughed with the drill will keep the cutter from cutting more stock than intended

I know what you mean about people claiming to be machinists. I'm a second year student at a Tech. College in the Machine Tool dept. While I lay no claim to being a machinist, rather I'm an apprentice. But, one of my classmates in the first year today told me he's already a machinist and is just getting his degree. I asked him where he worked, he told me, then added that he had been there for all of TWO MONTHS and had just been put on as an operator. How could he call himself a machinist?

My home-made CNC router milling some aluminium

Here my home-made CNC router is milling a scale RC helicopter tail rotor hub from a piece of 6082-T6 aluminium. You can see me spraying spirit on the work piece occasionally for cooling. This works great for aluminium.

Thanks, I'll experiment some more with the technique. When I mill with the 3 mm carbide end mill in the video it's cutting 0,5 mm deep (0,02"). 6082-T6 is 50% harder than MIC-6 and twice as strong.

I designed it around the critical parts I bought used from Ebay (the rails and screws) and built it from various materials. The table is a heavy computer desk with routed slots in it. The bridge is made from an extruded aluminium girder, side plates from aluminium sheet/MDF/aluminium sheet sandwich, and MDF wood. I used CAD software to design it and went through several designs before I was satisfied and started building.

Hello Axel. I Know you're right, but the purpose of this machine is for hobby. I live in Brazil and its very expensive to make a machine like this one because all parts are imported from other countries. If I have to support these fences I would expend more than US$1000 and because of that I decided not to support.

I also use the drill files to cut the pcb holes. I have however started to make some programs with excel and visual basics to use the rest of the gerber file. It seem to be faster to import the zip file and open it in the program itself. I still have to work on file management issues.

Hi weild1, I have not made provision to cut the PCB out, but I guess you can if you change the drill bit with a small milling cutter and make several passes, you can achieve it. I personnaly use a band saw. The program I use are easytrax and sprint-layout, they both output the data in Gerber format. With an Excel program, I rearrange the data to move the drill in a serpentine fashion. Everything is done in imperial measurements. Best regards, AT

Minha cnc eu já estou com o projeto quase concluido no solidworkd (sai do autocad, hehe). Estou com os motores quase em mão. Falta o controle eletrônico, ainda tenho que pesquisar os tipos, vantagens de cada um preços, etc. Faltam também os mancais, rolamentos, está tudo pesquisado... Tem que juntar o dinheiro também. I was horrified to learn the other day, that one of the reasons there are so many good cheap machine tools on the market was that, with the current excessive health and safety legislation in place, schools will just not take the risk of exposing kids to the machine shop environment and are closing them down. How will our passion for machining be preserved if people like you don't pass on their expertise and knowlege through videos like these ?
