Thanks for being so thorough. As a beginner I use an old Craftsman I rebuilt (it was trash). Its fence is incomplete (no lockdown mechanism) and normally isn't square with the blade, so every cut I make I have to measure it from each side of the blade and then clamp the other end of the fence with a C-clamp, and pray it doesn't move during a cut. You are so lucky to have a real table saw!

actually what i do is to keep pressure on the back as i start thru then transfer my pressure to the front after i reach the halfway point, if i am jointing something that has a ggod size bowin it and i am forced to joint it with the bowed side down the above will not work, in this case i keep the pressure on the infeed side ( starting side)...

I been milling my own wood now and started to get in to wood work..I hope you dont think this is a stupid question,,but I keep hearing diff. things about the best way to run a piece tru a jointer and I'm kinda confused...Is it best to put pressure on the front of the table *as soon as your piece touches it* or the back of the table runnin a piece tru..I just wanted your thought what you do....Thanks again..I learned alot frm your vids!

After jointing, lay pieces on board 19mm MDF with a strip of newspaper below. Nail 2 blocks against one long edge. Make a tee pee using a 19mmx30mm stick under the join and nail 2 more blocks on the other edge. Remove the stick and carefully push the 2 pieces flat. If they are hard to flatten, draw a pencil line on the outside of the blocks, and renail wider on pencil line. Glue with batten clamped to hold down. This gives excellent fit and you can feel any gaps as they move under your hands.

Thanks for the tip! Excuse my ignorance, but what is the "four nailed blocks" method you mentioned? As for heating blankets, I had gotten one from LMI a long time ago (6" by 36"). I also have a smaller one (6" by 25") from Hanalima, for smaller instruments.

Kathy, A good jointer will do this job in about 4 seconds. Set the jointer at almost zero to avoid chip out. Then use the 'four nailed blocks" to join - rarely fails. What heating blanket do you use?

I'm sorry, I still disagree on left hand placement. I have 3 other safety videos including one from a national trade association and another from a well known woodworking school in Indiana. Also my Time Life series book, the manual for the jointer and my shop teacher back all teach the left hand on the table method. Watch the video agian, you VIOLATED the 3" margin of safety with you left hand fingers. Plus it is more likely to tilt the board away from the fence. Just my 2 cents.

Note that, regarding left hand placement, I have two different procedures. One for boards wider than the fence is tall, the other for narrower boards. I prefer not to release contact with the board being jointed by repositioning my left hand, as this sometimes causes the board to lift from the cutting pressure of the knives. Maintaining hand position, having the guard in place and operating correctly, and using the fence as a size standard all add up to safety.

I am a shop teacher and for the most part I like this series. HOWEVER I am against what he says to do with the left hand. You NEVER run your left hand over the cutter. Your right hand should be on a push stick of resting on the fence. Your left hand should be resting on the table about 6" back from the cutter NOT MOVING, then when the board is 1/2 way through, reposition it on the other side of the cutter, but do not go above the cutterhead with left hand.

As a general rule woodworking retailers sell push pads and push sticks (aka: push blocks). When Im edge jointing a board Im likely to use a push pad in my left hand to hold the material laterally against the jointer fence and a push stick in my right hand to hold the material down to the table, and to propel it forward. When face jointing a board I use two push pads, one in each hand, to hold the material down and move it forward.

Thanks for your question Calinji - I think by slot you mean a dado - a groove in timber to slot in a shelf. For that you can either use a dado blade set on your saw or a straight bit in a router. The router will typically give you a cleaner cut, and with the triton saw bench you may have difficulty fitting a dado blade to your saw as the triton is designed to give you minimal clearance, while providing for adjustment. I would use the router.

Thanks for your kind comment :-) I use a cheap Ryobi half inch router - it has plenty of power and was easy to fit to the Triton workbench router table.

Ah but the point of the triton system is that you can use your own tools - the triton is really just a big jig, leaving your tools versatile. That's what makes triton good for compact workshops - you can just put on a router table top on the same stand so you don't clutter up your shop :-)
