Great video! I'm planning my own wood scavaging expedition for this weekend. I think I'll take someone with me to help with skinnning and carrying though. I'm hoping to bag a sheet of 3/4" plywood, but that may be too big of an aspiration for my first try.

Very entertaining, thank you! I was chuckling all the way through it... good job, you killed and carved yourself a mighty fine 2x4!! I hate that Man vs Wild guy, I saw the 1st 2 shows and watched him tell people to do things they should NEVER do in a survival situation. Was funny to watch him though, especially when he was complaining about the shear loneliness he experiences with he lack of human contact. LoL.... his freak n' crew is there with him... how lonely can he possibly be?

seriously. a good straight and flat 2x4 is hard to find, and then once it gets to your house and the humidity changes, everything you sought for is ruined, maybe a new wood rack would help though...

Just some thoughts on your cord management: 1. Drill a hole behind the tv to bring the cords through, so they aren't seen below the tv. 2. on the backside of the tv support, take some velcro strips (the ones that are soft on one side and scratchy on the other) about 4 inches long and screw them inside. You'll be able to then tie all the cords up without them being seen. 3. add some white channel molding below your plug to the tv, and hide the power cables. Other than that, looks good bro

Great job. How did you paint the MDF? I did a similar project using MDF and it came out pretty good. However, when I painted it, the paint came out "bubble-E" and not as glossy as I would have liked/expected. I found this discouraging and I would like to learn how to deal with this. I am planning a second project and I could really use your help with this. Thank you in advance

Hey Steve...if you get the chance could you show a video of how you lacquer....I use it a lot because I do not have the patience to sand between coats of Poly...however my recent projects have not turned out like I was hoping....I definitely am struggling with how to sand after you are done...I am afraid to take it all off.

The plumbers strap made a great edge treatment! I use that strap all the time to hang pipes or feed systems, but I use stainless strap. How about stainless steel straping with brass screws,and silvergray instead of black? Now I'm going to work on my own design. Thanks Steve!

Great stuff. I'm actually getting hints from my wife to replace out 'TV Cart'. The TV is on the wall but we use this night-stand-looking thing with wheels for the components. It is made for a tube TV to sit on and put all the stuff under it, anyway... perhaps I should go the same route as you. I now have access to a woodworking shop and I've used Sketchup before. Oh yeah, the vent cover is done and in place doing it's job !

Thanks Steve, really appreciate the tip. I'm currently half-way through a serious modification of a cheap IKEA pine desk. Everything was going fine - cut down the width, altered the distance between the two sides, etc., etc. It was all working out well and much cheaper and easier than buying the lumber. Then I decided to add a bit of stain. Sanded down everything and... did I mention it was cheap pine? Argggggghhhhhhh. Big mistake. We live and learn.

@spilperson I used rice for the filler. I experimented a bit with 1/4" mesh, but the rice seems to want to clog up. I think I could have added even more baffles to slow down the trickling. But I was tired of cutting them out!

... and since we can only really do one thing at a time it's likely that each thing we put down will never get picked up again. :-) Unitasking in my family seems to be intuative "I JUST DO WHAT I'M TOLD". I am doing all my kitchen doors with mdf and painting them. I Love mdf as I have used it all over the house during my remodeling. It is easy to cut and edges right nicely. Good idea for the game too. I think I will make one for my granddaughter. Thanks for all you do Steve.

I agree with Shannariano about your camera work! You stand too close, give me some personal space! Use a proper video camera (it looked like I look when I use the webcam built into my laptop), at a decent distance, on a tripod. There's no more wrong with .tk than with .tv (hosts lots of videos), or .cx (this last is just a part of Australia as far as I can see).

A good message, and not just to woodworkers. You find this kind of mass bundling of media/data/plans/whatever across all crafts and professional trades. It's not always illegal stuff, but hey who's got the time to police a CD/DVD with 14,000 things on it! More important is that uncertified media (CD/DVD) can have viruses, and seriously harm your PC ... Oh, for some reason your hair spooked me in this vid. I'll try and figure that one out for myself. Might just be the contrast on my screen.

Few extra tips: - Wax paper also helps prevent sticking to work surfaces. - Another alternative to wax paper are dowels. They can help seperate from clamp rods, levitate off a surface and are reusable. - Wiping the glue makes cleanup easier after drying, however you still will have slight smearing. Try rubbing fine sawdust on the glue squeeze-out then then immediately scraping out with a chisel. Trust me, it works.

W/ your arms fully stretched out to each side, the distance from the tip of your left middle finger to the tip of your right middle finger is very close to your height. My height is a bit over 6 foot so I use this to get a quick, rough idea for lengths in the 3 to 7 foot range. Also, my shoes are about a foot long, so I heel-toe measure distances for estimating.

Very good. On average the tip of your elbow to the tip of your middle finger is 18 inches. From the crotch of your thumb to its tip is 2 inches. Most of the time your finger lengths are a 1/4 inch difference in length. Also on average from the tip of your middle finger to the knuckle ( not sure of it's medical name) on your wrist is also 8 inches. From the top of your shoulder to the tip of the middle finger is 32 inches.

@adaptivecadd Hey Matt. I got the 1/8" blade at Woodcraft. Mine finally broke, but I don't think I'll get a new one soon...they are really expensive. But the 3/16" blades are pretty widely available (even at big orange box) for around $15. It seems to work fine.

Hi again, One more comment. You said you wish you had a spindle sander. You can make one that works okay out of a large dowl rod, or round table leg, etc, with stick on sand paper on it, or sand paper glued on to it, then put into a drill press. You might have to install a small rod, or bolt in one end so you can chuck it into the drill press chuck. Happy workworking.

Hi, Great informative video, and a nice box. Do you think it would be worth the trouble to glue a small piece of material in the saw cut rather than just gluing it closed like you did.?Doesn't just gluing it tend to make the box smaller and pince the drawer? I notice that Designer woods doesn't glue it closed at all, leaving the cut open. I like the look of your better. I gotta go make me some.

The original aluminum chair was designed by Elizabeth Browning Jackson, of New York city. The book Steve got the photo from is "Designing Furniture" by Seth Stem, published by Taunton Press. It's an intriguing form & obviously a challenge to build in wood. Good job Steve. I doubt a full size version in wood would hold together unless it had some hidden steel reinforcing at the joints. It's more realistic than a Rietveld chair tho.

Very nice. I saw a similar box in a recent Shop Notes but I like the simplicity of this one quite well. I do have to wonder though, would the mitered edges be strong enough to hold up to abuse? Not to say anyone would abuse your box, but clipboards to tend to get moved around.

I'd just like to mention that the Kreg Jig cost $00. But you can get a Master Kreg Jig for $150 or much simpler jigs for as little as $22. The project featured here can be done with even the simplest of jigs. Heck you can even make kitchen cabinets with the simplest jig. It will just take you longer to set everything up...

I treat woodworking machines like wild animals. I keep my hands out of the way from a slipped chisel or screw driver's path and when working on band saw, table saw I use push stick whenever possible. Also I don't work on machines when I am tired.Like your vids.Thanks

Steve, I cut my fingers on my table saw. It was my stupid mistake, I was in a hurry and tired. I shouldn't have been working with my saw under conditions like that. The only reason I lost the tip of my thumb , was because I had smashed it with a 3 lbs. mini-sledge a few days earlier, so it had to go.

That's not going to happen. Since his accident, Steve's using the "CutStop" chistles - these have a handle at both ends for additional safety. BTW how do people who use StopSaw cut their sausages?

Very true. Nothing is ever perfectly safe. The saw stop goes a long way in preventing an injury, an injury even a very experienced woodworker could make if he lets his attention slip for just but a moment (and let's face it--none of us is perfect). And for some woodworkers the reduction of risk will be worth the extra price in the long run. No scare tactics or legal threats needed here, just an appeal to reason.

The Saw Stop device makes cutting yourself more difficult but it doesn't protect against everything - kickback is still possible and this can put you in the emergency room just as fast. Getting a shirt sleeve caught in the blade won't trip it and it's just nasty what your arm looks like after that little adventure. Knowing the correct way of doing things goes a long way. Heck, I've seen Norm makes some really boneheaded mistakes in his shows.

So I decided to get a small chunk of wood and start whittling...somethin g I haven't done since I was a kid. It's an invigorating exercise! So if you are at a loss for something to do, try whittling! It's asy and requires nothing more than a pocket knife and a block of pine.
