It can't hurt to try this out on a test piece. I agree, use a matte black. I think the finish will adhere better. Make sure your test piece is smooth (easy to do, just get a scrap piece of 2x4 and sand it starting with around 80-100c and working up to 400 grit). Make sure the paint coat is cured. Check the can for COMPLETE cure time. If not cured completely the alcohol might dissolve the paint. If it works you'll know, and you can practice your technique.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use this method on a painted surface? If it is, does the type of paint matter? For instance could I use a non gloss black spray paint and finish it with a french polish?

hey montymckinnon not sure where in canada you are from pal. i just recently polished a table by copying this video it turned out great. i'm from hamilton i got the naphtha from shermin williams its a paint store there all over the place i think? and i used 99% isopropyl alcohol from shoppers drugmart which is better than denatured i think.

i´m not suggesting to use an different shellack, what i´m saying is only that the amount of lubricant needed varies according to the type of shellack - de-waxed but non bleached (button polish) one is still the toughest one and the best suited for table tops

the degree of lubrication depends as well on the waxiness of yore shellack - lemon-shellack for example is non de-waxed shellack, for which you only need very view oil ....

While I'm sure my comment is going to catch some flak, I have removed every guard from every saw I have ever owned. Well, table saws anyway, you'll find that a MAJORITY of people that use thier table saw regularly will remove the gaurd because it stops you from doing a large number of operations with the saw

THANK YOU for this video! I'm moving into a new condo where I would like to install crown, and had started to change my mind because of the compound cut. Then as I was laying awake in bed this morning, thinking about how I could cut it, this very idea came to my mind, so I decided to check YouTube to see if any videos showed a good way of doing it. I guess you don't do this for a living. This isnt rough carpentry. If your working with crown that shrinks enough to loosen nails and cause gaps then I would suggest finding a new supplier.

Nice jig if every wall/ceiling/rake angle were perfect 90. In reality, never happens. You can make 1 million perfect cuts on this jig and no two pieces will ever fit tight as intended. The result will be perfect cuts you can drive a truck through, because not the way to measure and cut crown.

Excellent. I've watched plenty of "how to", this video is fantastic and beats all. So many questions were answered. The only thing I wished he would have added - not all crown molding is the same. Do they all get cut at 45 degree ? As far as the comment above to lay the piece flat on the table is Bad advice because most homeowner miter saw blades bevel only in one direction. Unless you want to spend $500 or more on a sliding dual bevel miter saw. This video saves you that extra expense.

Hey now not everyone over the pond uses a honing guide. We got the same lesson here in Canada about sharpening by hand only, and if we couldn't sharpen the tool manually to the point of shaving your hand we're not allowed to use it. This is at an art and design school too, not even specifically woodworking. Also I've never, ever seen someone use sandpaper to sharpen a chisel, it looked like he only went to 320 grit too. My stones go to 8000.

yeah, because in our college course we were taught how to do it by hand and we weren't allowed to progress to anything else until we could sharpen our tools to a superb finish by hand. like im not having a go or taking the piss, it just sort of surprised me that over here you get laughed at if you cant get a chisel sharp enough to shave with by hand, but over there it seems to be a standard to use a honing guide or a wheel. haha just a difference over the pond i guess.

I never use a buffing wheel, because it really does cause 'flat-back' problems. I remove the burr by turning the chisel over on the stone, then sharpen the bevel again, and repeat alternately until the burr just vanishes. My chisels are shiny on the back and if I was daft enough to do it I could shave with them. Instead I just trim a chamfer across end grain. No need to insult this guy, if you disagree is there?

For the "Wood Joint Torture Test" in WOOD magazine issue #173, we created and then destroyed more than 100 joints in our quest for the answers to those questions and more. This video shows some of the joints we broke.

I like the video and love the concept behind it. But, I have trouble making conclusions from the tests. They allowed the the wood to bow thereby allowing the the strength of the individual pieces of wood to play a significant part of the results. Each piece of wood varies in strength according to grain and bowing exaggerates the results. Although it may be somewhat practical for woodworkers, the test seemed a little more theatrical than scientific. But, I'm not a an expert on scientific method

For clarity on my earlier post: the plywood joint "tested" in the video is submitted to a torsion, and not to a shear, load. This is neither to suggest that torsion is the proper test method, nor that shear testing would have been more valuable. Meaningful testing would have also assured equal joint areas (the number of combinations of that, alone, would have made a huge library of material), joint lengths, etc. Again: this video DOES NOT represent the scientific method properly applied.

Everyone should realize this "scientific" testing is bull: Plywood dado joint strength isn't measured in shear, but in torsion. A shear test would have had the joint parallel to the direction in which force was applied. Even if the outer edge of the plywood had been supported, the test would have been of plywood's flexural modulus and structural integrity instead of the joint per se. Add to that the remaining methodological flaws, and all you've got is a meaningless video of failures.

Interesting! I am wondering how joints and glue react to sudden impact. I mean, nobody sits down in a chair this slow. Most stress-situations in real life are impact-like. It requires as whole different testing set-up, but it would be interesting, too.

No wonder that the wood fails before the dowls. The wood has been cut regardless of the direction of the fibers. Thats the pricipal problem. The Vikings did it in a better way. They didn't use a saw to cut wood :) They used axes to split it. Wood always splits along the weakest line.

Dovetails are stronger due to the inherent mechanical strength of the dovetail. By this method of joinery, dovetailing will last as long as the wood that its made of whereas a glued up biscuit joint will be subject to wood movement slowly breaking down the joint and ultimately the joint will fail.

It sure is but hide glue used for centuries is just as good if used correctly as evidenced by 200 yr old furniture, much of it never used glue for anything other than a secondary attachment.

Wow, only stress tests I've ever done with wood is with a unit in use under normal wear and tear - in the AF we used to do stress and crack testing on equipment but that was to insure a fighter didnt fall on someone's house. Boeing's wing test recently on a carbon fiber wing is just as awesome to watch especially at the failure point - BOOM.
