I like the video and love the concept behind it. But, I have trouble making conclusions from the tests. They allowed the the wood to bow thereby allowing the the strength of the individual pieces of wood to play a significant part of the results. Each piece of wood varies in strength according to grain and bowing exaggerates the results. Although it may be somewhat practical for woodworkers, the test seemed a little more theatrical than scientific. But, I'm not a an expert on scientific method

For clarity on my earlier post: the plywood joint "tested" in the video is submitted to a torsion, and not to a shear, load. This is neither to suggest that torsion is the proper test method, nor that shear testing would have been more valuable. Meaningful testing would have also assured equal joint areas (the number of combinations of that, alone, would have made a huge library of material), joint lengths, etc. Again: this video DOES NOT represent the scientific method properly applied.

Everyone should realize this "scientific" testing is bull: Plywood dado joint strength isn't measured in shear, but in torsion. A shear test would have had the joint parallel to the direction in which force was applied. Even if the outer edge of the plywood had been supported, the test would have been of plywood's flexural modulus and structural integrity instead of the joint per se. Add to that the remaining methodological flaws, and all you've got is a meaningless video of failures.

Interesting! I am wondering how joints and glue react to sudden impact. I mean, nobody sits down in a chair this slow. Most stress-situations in real life are impact-like. It requires as whole different testing set-up, but it would be interesting, too.

No wonder that the wood fails before the dowls. The wood has been cut regardless of the direction of the fibers. Thats the pricipal problem. The Vikings did it in a better way. They didn't use a saw to cut wood :) They used axes to split it. Wood always splits along the weakest line.

Dovetails are stronger due to the inherent mechanical strength of the dovetail. By this method of joinery, dovetailing will last as long as the wood that its made of whereas a glued up biscuit joint will be subject to wood movement slowly breaking down the joint and ultimately the joint will fail.

Wow, only stress tests I've ever done with wood is with a unit in use under normal wear and tear - in the AF we used to do stress and crack testing on equipment but that was to insure a fighter didnt fall on someone's house. Boeing's wing test recently on a carbon fiber wing is just as awesome to watch especially at the failure point - BOOM.

Thanks for being so thorough. As a beginner I use an old Craftsman I rebuilt (it was trash). Its fence is incomplete (no lockdown mechanism) and normally isn't square with the blade, so every cut I make I have to measure it from each side of the blade and then clamp the other end of the fence with a C-clamp, and pray it doesn't move during a cut. You are so lucky to have a real table saw!

actually what i do is to keep pressure on the back as i start thru then transfer my pressure to the front after i reach the halfway point, if i am jointing something that has a ggod size bowin it and i am forced to joint it with the bowed side down the above will not work, in this case i keep the pressure on the infeed side ( starting side)...

I have to disagree with you, although I think this is really just a terminology issue. Yes the joint is cross-grain, but it is still also long-grain to long grain. Just because the boards are oriented 90 degrees to one another does not mean it isn't a long grain bond. The only time it is NOT a long grain bond is when end-grain is involved. And although a mortise and tenon has some end to long grain, the vast majority of the joint is long grain to long grain.

Ummm...just for the record, there's no long-grain-to-long-grain at all in a mortise and tenon joint. None. The joint is entirely cross-grain. However there's a relatively huge glue surface, and the bare joint itself has mechanical strength when it's well fitted. This is why they last pretty much forever.

I just sold my hollow chisel mortiser. I found that cleaning up the mortise with a chisel was tedious and tended to make each mortise not identical with the others. So I had to fine tune each tenon. For me, a plunge router is the way to go. Much faster.

Hey Kev. There will always be a delay with your comments showing up. I moderate them. As far as rounding over tenons, I don't really get too precise. I just round them over enough so that they fit. Trying to round over an integral tenon with a router is going to be very tricky. So a few swipes with a chisel does the trick in short order.

Nope. Generally the sides of the mortise are called the sides of the mortise. The flat face of the tenon is indeed referred to as the cheek. I imagine its a reference to the human body, and the perpendicular relationship between our shoulder and our cheek.

Nice presentation. Kind of hard to believe that you get 8 sheets from a 1" board, though. Especially rough cutting to 1/8". I'm good and I'm lucky to get 5-6 on nice straight grain stock. And I wouldn't recommend gluing down a sawn surface. At least clean it up with a scraper. What blade are you using in the resaw?

thanks for the info, the site im getting the info from says the veneer thickness ranges from (.058 / 1.47mm) to (.050 / 1.27mm) for the cross band.i would imagine these are factory produced and machined, probably too thin to do myself. ill keep watching your videos for more tips though.

It really depends on how well-tuned your drum sander is. I know guys who have it so well tuned that they pretty much make paper thin sheets of veneer just for fun. So You can pretty much go as thin as you dare.

I agree that 1/8"-3/16" would give a pretty noticeable border. I suppose some might like it. But the veneer I am talking about in this video is bandsawn at about 1/8" and sanded down to 3/32". Thats starting to get thin enough that the endgrain becomes less and less of an issue. But ultimately, to each his own. Many folks just trim out the veneered board after the veneering is done, which gives a noticeable border regardless of the veneer thickness. And same thing when making panels.

generally when i use veener i vacuume press it with a solids glued on the edge of my substraight that way my veneer covers both the substraight and the solid edging, leaving a clean edge. with 1/8" or 3/16" veneer the endgrain of the veneer is much more noticable. i guess that apeals to some to look good.

Generally anything less than 1/8" is considered veneer. Treating the end grain using home sawn veneer is no different than when you use any other veneer. You still need to cover up the ugly substrate. At around 3/32", these thick veneers are quite stable even over wide surfaces. And I agree that you would want to veneer both sides to maintain equilibrium.

i dont consider that a veneer. it is rather thick and what do you do with the end grain? (say on a table top) glued to a sub-straight it could be quite unstable and it is not economical givin that with that thickness of veneer. both sides of the sub-straight will be required to be veneered in order to maintain stability. thats my position. Mean whyle commercial veneers can often be quite thin.

Using this veneering tech you could make two of any project out of the same amount of solid wood. That's the point. Veneers in days really gone by were much thicker than the 'toilet-tissue' we get these days, so this is a way of making your timber go further, plus you can clean up with a plane afterwards. Try that with modern veneers.

I fail to understand why you do not consider a product from a person who owns one of these machines a piece of art... Just because a machine carves the final product? Does the user not create the item before it is carved? usually steam doesnt work thru a finish , but try using a sharp razor blade , make a clean slice on the dent to break thru the finish, then apply hot water , sometimes it will seep thru the cut and swell the dent out , you could also try a little steam, but go easy or you can damage the finish, when done a quick coat of wax will hide the cut, other wise just sand it down steam the dent and refinish, I wouldnt replace ,

Any suggestions for "stained" stair treads, (Oak). Very small dents, 1/8" deep @ Max. But Home owner is an ass requests entire staircase be replaced due to 4 small dents not visible from a standing position. (dam people!). Any advice? I am new to your posts. I have been woodworking for almost 7 years. I do a distressing on the wood that adds dents, we actually hit it with a chain so the wood looks as though it is an antique. very cool tricks this will come in handy when i need to do a fine finish piece. Also does this work on hard woods as well as soft woods?

This happens secondary to change in moisture inside the wood. Usually with wood bought in from a different climate. It can be helped by letting the wood cure in it's rough shape in the shop where it will be built before working it. I have read where some luithers (however you spell guitar builders) even go as far as to bring their pieces into their homes at night for that very reason. Western / dry states have prob. with this. Test the wood for humidity/moisture and then your shop.

I'm sorry, but for anyone saying thay Charles craftsmenship is bad because he's had to use this technique many times, is a complete fool. You can have the straightest peice of wood, jointed, and planned, then rip it, and it will throw a curve right back in to it. It could be clamped dead on straight, and things like that will happen. That's why there are little tricks like this one.

no offense, but if you have had to do this "many many times", it doesn't say much for your manufacturing abilities. surely you should be looking to machine the components dead straight and square (and out of dry, straight grained quarter sawn lumber) so that when glued up the workpiece is truly flat ? this method, assuming it does actually work will only work when the wood is in the white, once you have applied a finish, you're fcked ...

this won't work and I doubt if they tried it that it lasted much time.. divided light doors like that can twist for a number of reasons, mainly because they are clamped up wrong and not clamped flat. If they are clamped flat and twist anyways its likely because you aren't using properly dried wood and your shop has poor humidity and temperature conditions. Even if this video method worked for them, I doubt it lasted, once a door twists up you won't be able to get it perfectly flat again.

However, after spraying with precatalyzed lacquer a couple of the doors twisted, which resulted in the lower corners sticking out proud of its neighboring door (which didn't twist at all - strange given that they were cut from the same piece of wood). The doors are already finished so I can't steam/wet them. I tried "bending" them back into shape, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Did the lacquer cause this?

I've got one for you... I recently built a console out of Birch "multi-ply" featuring 4 doors (2 sets of double-doors) below 4 drawers. All door and drawer faces were cut from the same piece of Birch plywood so the grains match perfectly....
